A study in power, the battle between good and evil and the rise of a billion-dollar franchise from some rough sketches.

Written and directed by Randall Lobb and Robert McCallum, Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, is a comprehensive documentary that manages to balance fascinating details and insider stories of the comic book, merchandising, television and film worlds, with the sheer fun of an action hero.  The He-Man and the Masters of the Universe story is told by former key figures at Mattel as well as actors, designers, and producers, and fans who help viewers understand how big this phenomenon was.

The He-Man and Grayskull toy line quickly rose to popularity in children’s toy chests in the 1980s. He-Man’s creators believe that his trademark line “By the Power of Grayskull, I have the Power!” contributed to his success because it allowed little boys to feel empowered. This likely factored into He-Man’s prosperity as “one of the longest-running and largest toy lines out there,” said Eric Treadaway, founder of Four Horsemen Studios.

McCallum and Lobb’s documentary acknowledges both the high and low points that were involved in this franchise since its rise in the late 1970s. It is definitely a must-see for those who are interested in the entertainment industry and the hard work it requires to bring a franchise to life, or even those who might have felt “the Power” themselves.
