The Possibilities in Paint program by Participation House (London) aims to dissolve barriers by overcoming differences and collaborating through art. This collaboration not only brings community members together, but it gives those living with disabilities the novel opportunity to express themselves through creativity.

Possibilities in Paint: Denise’s Story

I worked with Participation House to develop a promotional video with the goal of informing the community about their innovative art program. I had the honour of working closely with Kathleen, the program facilitator, and Denise, a participating artist.

Denise has been participating in the art program for over 14 years. She never thought that art was a possibility for her until she met Kathleen. Her cerebral palsy has resulted in an inability to fully control her own motor movements.

The program works to incorporate the artists’ special abilities and movements in the method of painting. Kathleen has adapted many unique tools to accommodate the various grip strengths of the artists. Volunteers and support staff are always at hand to help in the collaboration process.

The filming for this video took two days after multiple weeks of planning. It was important for us to build a relationship with all of the participants involved so that they would feel comfortable on camera. The result showcases Denise’s journey, the beautiful relationship she’s formed with Kathleen, and the confidence she’s gained in herself through this innovative art program.
