The Canadian National Institute for the Blind (now known as CNIB) is a nonprofit organization driven by the mission of changing the lives of Canadians with vision loss.
Come to Work
The Come to Work program is a relatively new initiative from CNIB that focuses on helping Canadians with vision loss to find employment. The program runs skills workshops to teach clients interviewing tactics, job search techniques and resume pointers. CNIB also works with employers to form partnerships. This makes it easier for talent with vision loss to disclose their needs if the partner organization is looking to hire someone.
I created a Come to Work promotional video that involved a few months of planning and strategizing. I worked with the CNIB Ontario West team and the folks at the London Community Hub. After all of our planning, I hit a major roadblock. COVID-19 shutdowns forced me to pivot the idea for my video just as I was beginning to shoot footage.
I only managed to squeeze in one day of filming before the CNIB Hub had to close its doors to the public. With my original video idea out of the question, I needed to work with what I had. Andrew Walker, the coordinator for the Come to Work program in the region, became the main voice in the video. David Penny, who was originally going to be the central figure in the video, became a supporting figure.
The target audience for the Come to Work video is potential employers for CNIB’s partnership pool. These employers would be interested in improving their CSR and inclusive hiring practices. The goal for the video is to introduce the program to this audience and to help de-stigmatize talent with vision loss.
Along with the regular version, I also created a Described Video version of this project so that it is accessible to CNIB’s audience with vision loss. I also provided CNIB with social copy based on my carefully-planned strategy to accompany this video on their digital platforms, as well as short video cut-downs optimized for Instagram Stories (view this under my “Social” examples).
